Eat This-George Brett's Rant about the Media
Since when were we phased by cussing?
Welcome to KCondemand.com and Eat This. By now, you're probably heard it or seen it. George Brett took on the media, from a distance, singling out four local sportscasters he accused of being overly critical of the Royals manager and unqualified to do so.
In an interview at the ALS Golf Tournament on Monday in Overland Park, Brett was interviewed by KSHB producer Justin Unell. Brett indicated the only question about baseball was the final question when George was asked to weigh in on the job being done by Trey Hillman.
"Every manager takes criticism. Every manager is gonna take criticism. I don’t give a *^* if you’re Joe *^* Torre, you’re gonna take criticism! I think the problem in this town is that we’ve lost so many *^* years in a row that people don’t have any patience!
So as soon as he does something that the media doesn’t like, they explode on him. Well *^* you and *^* them! Believe me, Jack Harry, Kevin Kietzman, Roger Twibell…and Dave Stewart...have never interviewed for a manager’s job.
You know why? Because there are 30 teams in major league baseball. 30! No one’s ever called these guys to manage, have they? No one’s ever called then to be the general manager. Why? Because they don’t know what they’re talking about sometimes.
And I’m sick and tired of listening to it. Okay? I’m sick and tired of listening to it, believe me.”
I didn't volunteer to be included in George's rant. But I was. We talked Tuesday morning on the phone after I'd heard and seen the clip a number of times.
Maybe it's just me after 30 years in major league clubhouses and NFL locker rooms.
Maybe it's the language I hear on sit coms that network TV passes off as something that's acceptable for family viewing.
Have you watched "2 and 1/2 Men" with your teenage daughter? I can't recommend it.
Brett's language didn't really bother me. Yea, it was harsh. He did it in front of a microphone with the camera rolling...
But how can the media, after the fact, crucify George for his language when they thought it was ok to air it over and over again on radio and TV?
It was one of the worst jobs of "bleeping out" the bad words I'd ever seen. And there was no attempt to blur his mouth for the lip readers.
I think the media as a whole reacted so strongly to what was said because we, as a group, aren't good at "taking it."
We can throw verbal grenades in the clubhouse then run for cover. But heaven help the coach or athlete who shoots back at us.
Frankly, I think there's an appetite in this town for educated sports opinions when it comes to strategy, execution and performance.
Three out of the four sportscasters George singled out are over 50 and have been in the business 25 years or longer. We're qualified to comment on what we see based on what we've seen.
I'll admit it was fun to see George's pilot light still burning for the Royals with all the rented mules that've come through here over the past 20 years who thought of our favorite baseball team as nothing more than a paycheck.
Brett told me he hoped he might actually fire up the troops.
Trey Hillman and company are the only ones who can turn his words into something more than just hot air.
