Steve Rampy Heads to College
Longtime Blue Valley coach to join Pitt State staff
Friday afternoon, Metro Sports confirmed that Blue Valley head coach Steve Rampy will join the staff at Pittsburg State University.
Rampy was hired as the Gorilla's offensive coordinator, a job previously held by Tim Beck, PSU's new head coach. Beck was promoted earlier this month to replace Chuck Broyles who announced his retirement December 2 after 20 years on the job.
Rampy called it a once in a lifetime offer.
"I feel like I'm 25 again," Rampy told Metro Sports. "I'm scared, nervous, anxious. They're one of the most respected D-2 programs in the country."
Rampy took his high school team to Pitt State's summer camp for the past 8-9 years, sharing offensive ideas, schemes and philosophy with Tim Beck.
"I have the utmost respect for the way he treats kids and how he coaches," Rampy said.
After 25 years as head coach at Blue Valley, Rampy brings a wealth of high school experience and success to Pitt State. Four of his Tiger teams won state championships: 1991, 1998, 2003 and 2006.
That final championship was directed by Zach Rampy. His son was Blue Valley's senior starting quarterback in '06. That same season, Zach won the Simone Award which is awarded to the Metro's most outstanding player, large class category.
Brian Schottenheimer quarterbacked the '91 Blue Valley team. He's currently offensive coordinator with the NFL's New York Jets.
TE Justin Swift was one of the many to play for Rampy at the high school level before competing in college.
Swift also starred at Kansas State University, before an NFL career that included stops with Detroit, San Francisco and Denver.
Rampy said was comfortable leaving Blue Valley at this time with the Tiger football program in good shape talent wise.
Without naming names, Rampy added that 2-3 of his current assistants might be interested in replacing him as head coach with plenty of interest in the job coming from outside of the program, as well.
Rampy will report for work in Pittsburg on January 5.
