Free agent defensive tackle Shaun Smith, who finished the 2009 season with the Cincinnati Bengals, agreed to terms on a one-year deal with the Kansas City Chiefs on Wednesday, Smith’s agent, Neil Schwartz, confirmed in a telephone call on Wednesday.
Smith, who recently
changed his Twitter page photo to a Chiefs logo, also announced the deal on Twitter.
"It's a officiical am a Kansas city chief," the tweet read, according to a source with access to Smith's restricted page.
Financial details were not disclosed.
Smith, who played high school football at Wichita Heights High School in Wichita, Kan., has ties with former Cleveland Browns head coach and current Chiefs defensive coordinator Romeo Crennel, having played for Crennel from 2007-2008.
A versatile defensive lineman, Smith, who turns 29 in August, can play nose tackle or defensive end in a 3-4 defensive scheme.
Entering his seventh season, Smith’s best statistical season came in 2007, his first year with Crennel, when Smith posted 48 solo tackles, 14 assists, two sacks and a forced fumble, appearing in 15 games with 11 starts, all career highs, according to
