Chiefs sign WR Jerheme Urban
Former Cardinal reunites with Haley
After a slow start, the Kansas City Chiefs have been active in recent days with free agent signings, bringing back familiar players and signing a defensive lineman with ties to a member of the coaching staff.
The familiarity continued through Wednesday night, when the Chiefs and free agent wide receiver Jerheme Urban, who played for coach Todd Haley in Arizona, agreed to a two-year deal.
While the Chiefs have yet to announce the signing, Urban’s agent, John Drana, confirmed the deal in a Thursday morning e-mail exchange. Financial details were not disclosed.
“Jerheme experienced significant team and personal success under coach Haley during their time in Arizona,” Drana said. “Coach Haley and Mr. [Scott] Pioli are winners. Jerheme is excited for the opportunity to contribute to building a championship team in Kansas City.”
Urban, a native of Victoria, Texas, has played for the Seattle Seahawks and Arizona Cardinals. He entered the league in 2003 as an undrafted rookie free agent and was on the Dallas Cowboys’ practice squad in 2006.
The 29-year-old pro’s best statistical season came in 2008 during Arizona’s Super Bowl run, when Urban posted 34 catches for 448 yards and four touchdowns with Haley as the Cardinals offensive coordinator.
For his career, Urban has 87 catches for 1,231 yards and seven touchdowns, averaging 14.1 yards per catch.
UPDATE: The Chiefs confirmed the signing via a late Thursday morning news release.
